Damn Danish keyboard. only took me about an hour to figure out how to put the @ smybol down. So, I am sitting in the public library. They dont have many computers to use for free... so I am lucky I just waited around and got this one.
Sorry I haven't been updating every day. Its very difficult when you have to pay to use the internet at the hostel. Sorry, I am just not paying $2 to use the internet for 20 min. I am getting used to the currency system over here. The Kroner. Its actually really easy. They pay for a lot of things in just even amounts of kr. Things are a little on the expensive side, but overall not too bad. I am learing to just work the system.
So, yesterday I went to Sweden for the day. We went to the Lund University and had a few of the faculty show us around. It was really a nice old campus. It was very similar in size to the city of ann arbor, but a lot older and more historical. I would seriously consider going to school here only because the government of sweden pays full tuition for all of their students as well as international students. So, other than a small aplication fee, its free to go to university in Sweden. Talk about a deal. Everything over there is so well designed. Oh, and I found out that we pronounce IKEA wrong. its actually pronounced eh-kay-ya not.... eye-key-ya. Just an FYI.
We hung out around the university and city of LUND for a while. VERY cool. Caught some lunch in a small cafe. It rained a little bit, then cleared up as we went to visit another couple of developments in Malmo (sp?) One on the way there was a new development that was made to look old. They actually paint over bricks and make the paint peel off to have an old rustic feeling to the neighborhood. Kinda funny. I will see if I can find a name later, and upload pictures when I get back on my own computer.
We then visited a very ritzy part of town in a HUGE sustainable new development that has all the latest advancements in technology incorporated into the buildings. It was pretty neat. We walked around all day and were all pretty tired. We came back to the Hostel and had some beer. Oh yeah, there are bars in just about every public place you can think of. Its completely normal to walk down the street drinking beer. And it feels quite weird, but everyone does it. So, we get some good beer (Tuborg, and Carlsburg) spelling check again... and basically chill every night.
Todáy, we went to the free state of Christiania, which is its own governing state in the middle of copenhagen. The main entrance to get in to this small village of about 1000, was full of vendors that were dealing hash and pot. No big deal. Everyone was smoking it. We even were shown by our tour guide some of her friends hash. Best hash in town. hahaha. We were all a little culture shocked I think.
Anyway, it was a very interesting village. It was oriented mainly around hash and art. People are free to express themselves in any way they want. There were only a few main rules that include: No violence, no cars, NO HARD DRUGS, no weapons, and no gang symbols. They are one of the most peaceful villages if you can belive it, and they actually have all disputes and decisions made by common majority of the people that come to the meeting of whatever they are deciding. A very very interesting place.
Me and a fellow classmate took some of the public bikes and when for a long bikeride along the harbor. The biking system is crazy. I took some video and pictures of how there is literally more bike traffic than car traffic. They have their own paved bike roads, signs, and stop litghts. If you go to slow, you hear the person behind you ring their bell and go around. The average speed of the bikers here is fast. Faster than I could go. It was insane.
I am having such a good time here. We are all pretty tired from all of the activities, but we always get freetime to explore on our own. Tomorrow we are going for a day bike ride. We need to sketch a section of the major pedestrian street that has thousands and thousands of people go through one spot every hour. We have basically most of the day to explore on our own. On sunday we need to check out of the hostel at 10am and our flight back to Iceland doesnøt leave until 10 something pm. So, I am not sure how getting on the internet will work. But I will attempt to try something. If not.... I will be back when we get to Iceland.
Much love to all!!! I miss everyone very much. VERY MUCH!!!
Drew
